About the Author: A current U.S. Senator from Arizona, John Sidney McCain III entered the U.S. Navy, becoming the third-generation member of the branch after his father and grandfather who were four-star ranking commanders. McCain became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft. During his service in the Vietnam War, he was almost killed in the 1967 USS Forestral fire. While in Hanoi in October 1967, McCain’s aircraft was shot down and he was captured by the North Vietnamese, subsequently becoming a prisoner of war until 1973. After retiring from the Navy as a captain in 1981, McCain moved to Arizona and entered politics. In 1982, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving two terms and winning re-election four times. McCain’s political interests extend to campaign finance reform and diplomatic relations with Vietnam. McCain was a Republican presidential candidate in 2000 and 2008.
